It's All About "Jig"

I've hardly been able to contain myself with all the excitement surrounding Jig.  Even before it came out in America, with the premiere on June 17th, I've been obsessively scouring the web for any news and videos about the documentary.  I think I watched every video on Youtube related to the documentary.
I finally went to see the film yesterday.  I really wasn't sure what to expect as far as how the story would play out.  The documentary follows the stories of  Julia O'Rourke, Brogan McKay, John Whitehursrt, Joe Bitter, Will Sandun, a Russian ceili team, Simona Mauriello, and Claire Greaney.  Each faces a very different road and journey to the 40th annual irish dance world championships in 2010.

As different as their challenges may be they all do it with the same goal and aspiration in mind, to be a world champion.
The film gives a great sense of the day-to-day grind and rigor of dancing.  You see the dancers pushing themselves to achieve perfection with constant repetition.  Tough as steel, Brogran never waivers and takes on the challenges of dance class.  Shy and patient, John is a fierce hard worker.
Many of the dancers stories intertwine.  Brogan and Julia dance in the same age group so the tensions rise in the film as the two compete at the world championships.  Simona and Claire have been dancing against each other since they were children.  Simona is striving to achieve a world champion title, whilst Claire is trying to hold on to her title
With unprecedented access to the world championships, the cinematography is stunning and presents an intimate view of the competitive world of Irish dance that has never been recorded before.  The rhythms and beats are transfixing and the emotional ups and downs palpable.  Whether you have a foot in the world of Irish dance or you are just curious, the film is accessible to all.  Anyone with a goal or dream can look at these individuals and draw inspiration from their perseverance and dedication.

Check out the official website to see if Jig is playing at a theater near you.  If not, you can request it to come to your town!  Jig will be shown at the North American Nationals.
